4G vs 5G – Which Mobile Plan Should You Choose in Finland?

4G is still a good fit for many people: browsing, messaging and watching videos. A 5G plan can make sense if you need more speed, use a lot of mobile data or rely on a hotspot, and the price difference is small. Base your choice on your needs, phone compatibility, local coverage, the plan’s speed cap and its total cost.

If your current 4G connection works well, a 5G label alone is not a reason to pay more. If your connection is holding you back, check coverage and your phone first, then compare plan prices.

4G and 5G: the practical differences

4G and 5G: the practical differences
What matters?4G5G
Everyday phone useOften enough for messaging, browsing and video with a good connection.Extra speed may make little difference to everyday tasks.
SpeedYour plan’s speed cap and the local network determine performance.More speed potential, but not automatically faster everywhere.
Heavy data useUnlimited 4G may be enough. Data allowance and network technology are separate features. Can help with large downloads; still check the data allowance and EU roaming data.
HotspotsA practical option if the shared connection meets your devices’ needs.May help with several devices or large downloads where coverage is good.
Device supportYou need a device that supports 4G.You need a 5G-compatible phone, a suitable plan and the right settings.
CoverageCheck coverage where you actually use your phone.Check your operator’s 5G coverage, including indoors.
PriceCompare total costs; an affordable 4G plan may be the right choice.A small price difference can be worthwhile if you will benefit from the extra speed.

Which should you choose?

Choose 4G if…

  • You mainly browse, message and watch videos on your phone.
  • Your current 4G speed is enough and coverage is reliable where you use it.
  • Your priority is an affordable plan.
  • You would get little practical benefit from 5G.

Consider 5G if…

  • You use a lot of mobile data and large downloads take too long.
  • Your shared hotspot connection is too slow for your needs.
  • You want more speed potential.
  • Your phone supports 5G and a suitable 5G network covers your area.
  • A suitable 5G plan costs about the same overall as a comparable 4G plan.

Heavy data use does not necessarily require 5G. Unlimited 4G can be a good option if it is fast enough. Paying for a higher speed tier will not fix poor coverage.

Before you switch

  1. Check your exact phone model and its 5G support in the manufacturer’s specifications.
  2. Review the operator’s coverage map for your home, workplace and usual routes. A map does not guarantee indoor reception.
  3. Assess your current connection and your actual data usage.
  4. Compare the later price, activation fee, EU roaming data and other charges as well as the monthly price.

4G vs 5G: your questions answered

What is the difference between 4G and 5G?

They are different generations of mobile network technology. 5G offers greater capacity and speed potential, but your experience also depends on network deployment, coverage, congestion and your plan’s speed cap. Unlimited data, EU roaming allowances and call pricing are separate plan features.

Traficom: mobile network performance (Finnish PDF, pages 79–80)

Is 5G always faster than 4G?

No. A plan’s advertised speed is a cap, not a guaranteed speed at your location. A weak or congested 5G connection may work worse than a reliable 4G connection. Try measuring your current connection at different times in the places you use it.

Do I need a 5G phone?

To use a 5G network, you need a 5G-compatible device, a plan that supports 5G and coverage. Check your exact phone model in the manufacturer’s specifications and review its network settings. Changing your plan does not make a 4G-only phone compatible with 5G.

Apple: using 5G, device compatibility and battery settings

Will a 5G plan work on a 4G network?

Usually, yes. A compatible phone can use 4G/LTE when 5G is unavailable or its settings favour 4G. Confirm support for your plan, device and SIM with your operator. Roaming networks and conditions abroad may differ from those in Finland.

Does 5G use more battery?

Using 5G can shorten battery life, depending on your device, the network and how you use it. For example, an iPhone’s 5G Auto mode switches to LTE when 5G offers no noticeable benefit; keeping 5G on may use more battery. Check the guidance for your own phone.

Is it worth paying more for 5G in Finland?

Only if the extra capability is useful to you. Compare similar data allowances, EU roaming data and contract terms, including the price after a promotion and activation fees. If 4G meets your needs, saving money may matter more than unused speed. A small price difference can favour 5G when your device and coverage support it.

Should I choose 4G or 5G for a hotspot?

Start by asking whether your existing shared connection is sufficient. 4G can work well for one device and light work. Several simultaneous users or large downloads may benefit from 5G. Check tethering terms, data limits, coverage and, where relevant, upload speed: a 5G label does not guarantee these.

Is 4G enough for everyday phone use?

4G is often a sensible choice when browsing, messages and videos already work smoothly. 5G will not automatically improve every task. If you mainly use Wi-Fi, you may rarely benefit from a faster mobile connection.

How do I choose a suitable mobile plan?

Check your device and coverage, assess your data use and compare the total costs of similar plans. Also consider EU roaming data, calls, texts, contract length and any remaining payments on your existing contract. Choose the most affordable option that meets your needs rather than automatically picking the highest speed tier.

How this comparison works

Products, prices and features come from the same Fiksusti catalogue as our main mobile plan comparison. Examples are sorted by monthly price. Our shared recommendation compares first-year cost and speed among unlimited plans; it does not assess your coverage. Missing information is not estimated.

A price checked date is shown only for a successful check matching the current product and price. If no date is available, the card says so. Prices and terms can change: confirm them with the operator before ordering.

The comparison is free to use. Fiksusti may receive a commission for orders placed through affiliate links. Partnerships do not change the price order or shared recommendation rules. Our partnerships · How Fiksusti compares.
